Chapter 1: The Greatest of Major Sins:

Ḥadīth of Abū Bakr, Allāh’s Messenger (ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said, “Shall I not inform you about the greatest of the Major sins?” We said, ‘Yes O Messenger of Allāh.’ He said, “Associating partners with Allāh, and being undutiful to ones parents.’ He (ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) then sat up from the reclining position and said, “And I warn you against lying and false statements and he kept on repeating it until we wished he should be quiet.” (Bukhārī & Muslim)

The Major Sins of the heart.

Abū Hurayrah narrated Allāh’s Messenger (ṣal Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said, “Allāh does not look at your physical bodies and your wealth but He looks at your hearts and deeds. (Muslim). 

Nuʿman ibn Bashir (raḍī Allāhu ʿanhu) related that Allāh’s Messenger (ṣal Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said, “In the body there is a piece of flesh; if it is correct, the whole body is correct; and if it is corrupt, the whole body is corrupt. Verily this is the heart.”

Mentioning of Pride 

The statement of Allāh, “Verily, Allāh does not like the proud and boastful. [Sūrah an-Nisāʼ, 36]. 

The statement of Allāh, “…What an evil abode will be for the arrogant." [Sūrah an-Nahl, 29]. 

Ibn Masʿūd reported that Allah’s Messenger (al Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said, “He who has in his heart the weight of a mustard seed of pride will not enter Paradise.”

A man said, ‘O Allāh’s Messenger, a man likes his garment and his shoes to be beautiful.’ The Prophet replied, “Allāh is beautiful and He loves beauty, prise is disdaining the truth and despising people. [Muslim] 

Allāh’s Messenger (al Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said, “Shall I not inform you of the inhabitants of the hellfire? They are the harsh, proud and arrogant people.” [Bukhārī]

Pride: Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī reported Allāh’s Messenger said,

“He who is humble for Allāh’s sake to a degree, Allāh will exalt his status…” 

Ibn ʿUmar reported that Allāh’s Messenger (al Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said, “Avoid pride, for a man may be proud owing to a cloak he puts on.”

Conceit and Vanity: Allāh says, “And those who feared the punishment of their Lord..” (Sūrah al-Maʻārij 70: 72)

Conceit: Ibn Masʿūd, “Destruction consists of two things, despair and vanity.”

Abū Bakr reported that a man praised another man greatly in front of the prophet. The prophet said, ‘Woe to you” You have cut of your companion’s neck…”

ārith ibn Muʿāwiyah related the he told ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb “People used to entice me to tell them stories.” To which he replied, “I fear that when you tell them stories, you consider yourself great amongst them, and when you do that often, they may consider you as high as the stars above them. Then Allāh will lower you under their feet on the day of judgement..”

Anas related that the prophet (al Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said, “If you had not sinned, I would have feared for you what is more serious than conceitedness.”

Hypocrisy and showing off: The statement of Allāh, “So whoever hopes for the meeting with his Lord, let him work righteousness and not associate in the worship of his Lord anyone." (Sūrah al-Kahf, 18: 110)

Jundub ibn ʿAbdullāh, reported that Allāh’s Messenger (ṣal Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said, “He who allows the people to hear of his good deeds intentionally seeking their praise, Allāh will let the people know his real intention (on the day of judgement)…”

ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb narrated Allāh’s Messenger (ṣal Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said,

“Actions are to be judged by their intentions and a man shall get only what he intended.”

The Ḥadīth of the first persons to be judged on the day of resurrection and dragged into the Hellfire:  the martyr, one who acquired knowledge and recited the Qurāʿn, and one who was wealthy.

The Chapter of Joy (praiseworthy and blameworthy): The statement of Allāh, "Verily, he was among his people in joy." (Sūrah al-Inshiqāq, 13)

Despairing of Allāh’s Mercy and feeling secure from the plan of Allāh: The statement of Allāh, “Certainly, none despairs of Allāh’s mercy except the people who disbeliever.” (Sūrah Yūsuf, 87)

Allāh’s saying, “None feels secure from the plan of Allāh, except those people who are losers.” (Sūrah al-Aʻrāf, 99)

The statement of Ibn Masʿūd, “The greatest of the major sins are associating partners with Allāh, feeling secure against the plan of Allāh, despairing of Allāh’s mercy and despairing of Allāh’s hope.

Having Bad Thoughts Concerning Allāh:

Allāh says, “…and thought wrongly of Allāh, the thought of ignorance..” (Sūrah Āl ʿImrān 3:154)
Allāh says: “And that thought of yours which you thought about your Lord, has brought you to destruction, and you have become (this Day) of those utterly lost!” (Sūrah Fuṣṣilat 41:23)

“… who think evil thoughts about Allāh, for them is a disgraceful torment…” (Sūrah al-Fatḥ

48:6)Ibn ʿUmar: “The greatest of major sins is having an evil opinion of Allāh.”
Jābir related that he Allāh’s Messenger (
ṣal Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) saying three days before his death, “See that none of you dies without having good expectations from Allāh.”

Abū Hurayrah narrated that the Prophet (ṣal Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said,
“Allāh said, ‘I am to my slaves as he thinks of Me.’”

Pride and Mischief

Allāh says, “That home of the Hereafter (i.e. Paradise), We shall assign to those who rebel not against the truth with pride and oppression in the land nor do mischief by committing crimes.” (Sūrah al-Qaṣaṣ  28:83)

Anas reported that the Messenger of Allāh (ṣal Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: “None of you will have true Faith until he wishes for his (Muslim) brother what he wishes for himself.”

Abū Muḥammad ʿAbdullāh Ibn ʿAmr Ibn al-ʿĀaṣ narrated that the Allāh’s Messenger (ṣal Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: “None of you believes until his desire follows what I have brought.”

Enmity and Hatred

Allāh’s saying,  “…..If you differ in anything amongst yourselves, refer it to Allāh and His Messenger…”  (Sūrah an-Nisāʼ 4:59)

The Chapter of Lewd Sins

Allāh’s saying,Verily, those who like that (the crime of) illegal sexual intercourse should be propagated among those who believe, they will have a painful torment in this world and in the Hereafter. And Allah knows and you know not.” [Sūrah al Nūr: 19]

The statement of Allāh, “….If they are sincere and true to Allāh and His Messenger…” [Sūrah al-Tawbah, 91]

Loving The Enemies of Allāh

Allāh says,You will not find people who believe in Allāhand the last Day loving those who oppose Allāh and His messenger…”  [Sūrah al-Mujādilah:22]

Allāh says, “Say, [O Muhammad], "If your fathers, your sons, your brothers, your wives, your relatives, wealth which you have obtained, commerce wherein you fear decline, and dwellings with which you are pleased are more beloved to you than Allāh and His Messenger and jihad in His cause, then wait until Allah executes His command. And Allāh does not guide the defiantly disobedient people.” [Sūrah al-Tawbah :24]

Allāh's statement, “Do not incline towards those who do wrong, lest the fire touch you.” [Sūrah Hūd : 113]

The Hardness of The Heart

Allāh's saying, "....So because of their breach of their covenant, We cursed them, and made their hearts grow hard..."  [Sūrah mā'idah: 13]

The Prophet (al Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said, “Be merciful, Allāh will be merciful to you, pardon people, Allāh will pardon you…”

The Prophet (al Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said, “Do not speak excessively without remembering Allāh, for excessive speech without the remembrance of Allāh hardens the heart.”

Weakness of The Hearts

Allāh  says, “And We made their hearts firm and strong..." [Sūrah al-Kahf: 14]

Allāh says, “Alif-Lam-Mim. [These letters are one of the miracles of the Qur'an, and none but Allah (Alone) knows their meanings.] Do people think that they will be left alone because they say: "We believe," and will not be tested.  And We indeed tested those who were before them. And Allah will certainly make (it) known (the truth of) those who are true, and will certainly make (it) known (the falsehood of) those who are liars, (although Allah knows all that before putting them to test).” [Sūrah al-'Ankabūt 1-3]

The Major Sins of The Tongue

Allāh says, "And the slaves of the Most Beneficent (Allāh) are those who walk on the earth in humility and sedateness, and when the foolish address them (with bad words) they reply back with mild words of peace..." [Sūrah al-Furqān: 63]

Allāh's saying, "And when they hear Al-Laghw (dirty, false, evil vain talk), they withdraw from it and say: "To us our deeds, and to you your deeds. Peace be to you. We seek not the ignorant." [Sūrah al- Qaṣaṣ: 55]

Allāh says, "Not a word does he (or she) utter, but there is a watcher by him ready (to record it)." [Sūrah al-Qāf: 18]

Continuation of the major Sins of the Tongue

The Prophet (ṣalá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said, “He who believes in Allāh and the last day should speak good or remain silent.”

The Prophet (ṣalá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said, “Whoever guarantees (the chastity of) what is between his two jaw bones  ,(mouth) and between his two legs (his private parts), I guarantee for him paradise.”

Sufyān b. ʿAbdullāh related that he asked Allāh’s messenger (ṣalá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) “O prophet of Allāh, what is the thing you fear for me the most? The Prophet took hold of his own tongue and replied ‘restrain this.’”

Muʿād b. Jabal asked the prophet (ṣalá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), “would we really be punished for what we speak about?" To which the Prophet replied, "I am surprised O’ Muʿād, is there anything but the harvests of their tongues overthrow men into the hellfire, on their faces?”

Abū saʿīd al khudrī narrated, Allāh's messenger (ṣalá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) ) said, “when a man wakes in the morning, all the limbs humble themselves before the tongue and say 'fear Allāh for our sake, for we are dependent upon you, if you are straight, we are straight, but if you deviate, we too deviate.’”

Continuation of the major Sins of the Tongue

Abū Hurayrah reported that he heard the Prophet (ṣalá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) saying, "A person utters a word thoughtlessly (i.e., without thinking about its being good or not) and, as a result of this, he will fall down into the fire of Hell deeper than the distance between the east and the west."

Bilāl ibn al-ārith reported that Allāh’s Messenger (ṣalá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said, “A man speaks a word pleasing to Allah, not realising that it is worth many rewards, for which Allah records for him His good pleasure until the Day He meets Him….”

Jundub reported that the Messenger of Allāh (ṣalá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), said, “A man said: By Allāh, Allāh will not forgive this person! Allāh Almighty said: Who is he who swore by me that I will not forgive someone? I have forgiven him and nullified your good deeds.”

Excessive Speech

"But verily, over you (are appointed angels in charge of mankind) to watch you." al-infitār: 10

Verily Allāh loves three things for you and he hates three things for you. He loves that you worship Him alone, and that you do not join anyone else in your worship of him and that you do not worship other than him, He loves that you hold tight altogether to the rope of Allāh and that you do not be divided….
And Allāh hates for you hearsay (he said and she said – qīla wa qāl – spreading rumours), he hates for you excessive questioning (questioning that brings about no benefit), thirdly, he hates for you the wasting of money.”

Artificiality

Allāh’s statement,  "And when you look at them, their bodies please you; & when they speak, you listen to their word.." (63:4)

Ibn ʿUmar reported that the Prophet  (ṣalá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said, “An eloquent speech has  an influence of magic.”

The Prophet(ṣalá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said, “Indeed, Allāh hates artificial eloquent speaker amongst men..."

The Prophet  (ṣalá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said, “Allāh will not accept repentance on the day of Judgment nor ransom for the one who learns excellent speech in order to captivate the hearts of the people.."

Argumentation and Quarrelling       

Two Types of argument: praiseworthy and blameworthy.

Allah’s statement: “And of mankind there is he whose speech may please you (O Muḥammad), in this worldly life, and he calls Allāh to witness as to that which is in his heart, yet he is the most quarrelsome of the opponents." (Sūrah Al Baqarah 2:204)

ʿĀʾaisha narrated that the Prophet  (ṣalá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam said, "The man who is most hateful to Allāh is the one who quarrels the most.

Ibn ʿAbbās  reported that the Prophet  (ṣalá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam said), "It is a serous enough sin for you to continue quarrelling.”
