Brief Notes From This Lecture:
- Talq ibn Ḥabīb (رحمه الله), “Taqwá is actions that are in obedience to Allāh upon the light of Allāh, hoping for Allāh’s reward, leaving off sin and being fearful of the punishment of Allāh.”
- Allāh couples his punishment with fearing Him. Allāh says,
“…And fear Allāh as He deserves to be feared; verily Allāh is severe in penalty.” (Sūrah Al-Baqarah; 2:196)
- Fear Allāh in our actions and speech.
- “As He deserves to be feared” - carry out His rights and commands and stay away from His prohibitions.
- Fearing Allāh’s punishments aids us to do this.
- Allāh says,
“O you who have believed, fear Allāh as He should be feared and do not die except as Muslims [in submission to Him].” (Sūrah Āli-‘Imrān; 3:102)
- The reason Allāh doesn’t want us to die in that state is because we will brought back in front of him for reckoning.
- Allāh says,
- “And fear Allāh and know that you will meet Him. And give good tidings to the believers.” (Sūrah Al-Baqarah; 2:223)
- This is what the Prophets called their people to fear Allāh until it was settled in their hearts.
- Example seen in the story of Ḥābīl and Qābīl, it was the fear of Allāh that prevented Ḥābīl from killing his brother.
- Example seen in Prophet Nūh when he told his people “O my People, worship Allāh alone, you have no diety other than Him. Indeed, I fear for you the punishment of a tremendous day.” (Sūrah Al- A’rāf; 7:59)
- Even the best of creation, Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ)had that fear in his heart. Allāh says,
“Say, “Indeed I fear, if I disobey my lord, the punishment of a tremendous Day.” (Sūrah Az-Zumar; 39:13)
- Fasting aids in the fear of Allāh.
- On the authority of Abū Hurayrah, the Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Seven are (the persons) whom Allāh will give protection with His Shade on the Day when there will be no shade except His Shade (i.e., on the Day of Resurrection), and they are…….a man whom a beautiful and high ranking woman seduces (for illicit relation), but he (rejects this offer by saying): 'I fear Allāh’….” [Al-Bukhārī and Muslim].
- The Prophet describes the type of women – one of beauty and position to emphasize the level of Īmān, the fear of Allāh.
- Ibrahīm (رحمه الله) said, “once the fear of Allāh is settled in the heart, it burns the desires and it will repel one’s yearning for the dunya and silence one’s tongue from wanting the worldly affairs.
- Fuḍayl ibn ‘Iyād, “While you are alive there should be nothing you fear more than Allāh; and when death comes to you there would be nothing more you hope for and want than Allāh.”
- As for the one who lives in sin, he would be in fear of meeting his lord.
- Allāh says,
But for him who has feared his standing with his Lord, are two gardens.” (Surah Ar-Rahmān; 55:46)
- Mujāhid explains, this is the one who stands to sin in this world but then remembers and fears Allāh that it withholds him to carry out that sin.
