- Allāh says,
“O you who believe! Observing al-ṣawm (the fasting) is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may become al-Muttaqūn (the pious). (Sūrah al-Baqarah; 2:183)
- Fasting is an obligation on the believers.
- Fasting has been prescribed for the believers so that they may become pious slaves.
- Fasting causes a person to draw closer to Allāh.
- Imām al-Saʿdī: “Fasting is from the greatest means to obtain tawqá.”
- Imām al-Saʿdī: “A fasting person will abandon that which Allāh has made ḥarām for him. “
- The act of fasting prevents a person from speech and actions that are impermissible and hateful to Allāh.
- The fasting person accustoms his soul to be mindful of Allāh; he holds himself to account and he is aware that Allāh sees, hears and knows everything.
- The fasting person is not affected by the shayṭān during Ramaḍān for the shayṭān cannot flow through the human like blood, as is the case outside of Ramaḍān.
- The Prophet (ﷺ) mentioned, “...the shayaṭīn are chained, the doors of the Hellfire are closed and will remain closed. The doors of Paradise are open and they will not close...”—Tremendous encouragement to strive!
- The slave has abundant opportunities to seek reward and thus enter Paradise during this virtuous month.
- O seeker of good, come forward!
- O seeker of evil, refrain!
- Allāh frees slaves from the Hellfire every night.
- Three things that aid in establishing Taqwá - the doors of Paradise being open, the doors of the Hellfire being closed and the shayaṭīn being chained.
- Fasting aids you in being mindful of Allāh in the face of evil, being a minority.
- Allāh says, “If you persevere patiently and fear Allāh, that would be the determining factor in all affairs.” (Āli-‘Imrān; 3:186)
- Allāh says, “Whoever fears Allāh in obedience to Him and remains patient, then surely Allāh does not make the reward of the good doers go to waste.” (Sūrah Yūsuf; 12:90)
