The Shaykh began by mentioning that Allah created all of creation in order to worship Him alone without any partners and legislated for them actions that fulfill this matter and draw them nearer to Him. From these legislated acts of worship is the sawm (fast) which Allah has made compulsory upon every adult, sane and capable Muslim male and female.

The Shaykh continued that fasting has numerous fruits and many good deeds come out of it and went on to expound on some of the great virtues of fasting and the month of Ramadhaan. From the greatest of its fruits is at-taqwa asAllah mentioned in Surah-tal-Baqarah: 183. In addition to this he explained that the reward for fasting is great as Allah has kept it with Himself, that fasting is a junnah (protection) from sins, desires and the Hell Fire so it is upon us to stay away from anything that would even scratch or put a dent in the reward of our fasting.

Shaykh ‘Abdullah (hafidhahullah) went on to state that from the virtues and greatness of the month of Ramadhaanis that Allah glorified this month by choosing it from the rest of the months of the year for the Qur'aan to be revealed so we must also glorify this month, increase in our recitation of the Qur'aan and remember Laylatul Qadr (the night of power) which is an opportunity for us to have all of our previous (minor) sins forgiven.

Advising us, the Shaykh made a noteworthy point that reciting the Qur'aan should not be limited to when will I finish this page or this juz (section) but rather you should ponder upon every single ayah you recite and if you come across an ayah of mercy then ask Allah to have mercy upon you and if you come across an ayah of torment then seek refuge with Allah from it. Recite the Qur'aan as much as possible so your heart will be filled with tranquility and eemaan, you chest will be filled with happiness and so you will be full of yaqeen (certainty) as a believer in Allah.

Some of the etiquettes of this month which the Shaykh explained include preserving salaatut-taraweeh, reciting and pondering upon the Qur'aan, taking the sahoor, hastening to break the fast, giving as much charity as possible, feeding a fasting person and leaving off anything that would diminish a person’s reward.

The lecture continued with abundant benefit and beautiful reminders and brings much clarity on the virtues and etiquettes of fasting and this blessed month of Ramadhaan.
